Volunteer Opportunities

Crisis support volunteers choose to perform volunteer work for many reasons.  Involvement

with VCARS - Lanark County gives individuals an opportunity to:

  • Gain personal satisfaction

  •  Give back to their community

  • Assist the agency out of interest

  • Learn and upgrade their skill

  • Test a new career path

  • Learn about the legal/justice system

  • Socialization

  • Some volunteers may have experienced victimization in their own lives and wish to help and support others

  • Today, prospective employers seek candidates with volunteer experience (many VCARS volunteers have gone on to become police officers).

VCARS agencies rely on volunteerism. Similar to police work, volunteering in this capacity is not 'pretty work'.

Our volunteers are awakened at all times of the night. The work they perform can be construed as

distressing. The public can misdirect their state of upset and anger at our volunteers. The volunteer job can,

at times, be quite thankless. But the volunteers understand this. Praise and rewards do not seem to be

motives for their involvement. VCARS employees encourage, support and reward their volunteers on a

frequent basis.
