Coping Strategies

Victims will cope in many different ways, some positive and some negative, as they

struggle to deal with what has happened. According to the Department of Justice

Canada, the common coping strategies of victims include:

The Needs of Victims

The Canadian Urban Crime Study (1982) conducted by the Ministry of the Solicitor General, revealed

that victims of crime have common needs:

                             1. To speak to someone who would understand

                             2. Immediate reassurance regarding personal safety

                             3. Practical information about options available to help them cope with their victimization
